If you have an urgent need to add classroom space to accommodate your students or employees, and your budget won’t permit you to consider new construction, whether modular or stick-built, don’t overlook used modular classrooms which are available for immediate delivery from Modular Genius. They are ideal for public and private schools, churches and daycare centers that are experiencing a space crunch.

Most modular builders have used prefabricated school classrooms in stock that are in excellent condition and priced to give you substantial savings. Used models come in a wide variety of dimensions, square footage of under 1,000 square feet to more than 20,000 square feet, a variety of siding options, roofing materials, and wall and floor finishes.  Sometimes these classrooms are available “as is”, but you can often ask for modifications to the floor plans and interior/exterior finishes to suit your requirements. It may be possible to change the location of doors and windows, and add ADA-compliant ramps and steps.

Used Modular Classrooms

The main things to consider when buying used classrooms are:

  • Local building permits – Your pre-owned classroom must meet your local building codes, so be certain it complies with the proper requirements. Call the building department of the city or town where the classroom will be located to get a conditional use permit for the structure.
  • Condition – If the modular buildings were maintained properly, they should continue to serve you for a long time. Find out if the modules you intend to rent or purchase need repainting, repairs or renovations of any kind.
  • Warranty – What type of warranty will the seller offer you? Have the pre-owned classrooms been inspected for weather tightness, structural integrity, mechanical HVAC operation, and electrical and plumbing compliance? Many sellers offer limited one-year warranties on the repairs the make, but it’s important to know for sure.
  • Price – Many used modular buildings will save 10% to 40% in labor and materials because they are utilizing recycled structures. If your school, church or daycare has a somewhat flexible budget, weigh the price of rental or purchased of used modules against that of new modular buildings as well. While you may have to wait longer and new units may be more expensive, you will be able to get exactly what you want with a better warranty.
  • Delivery and setup – Will the seller deliver the modular structures and set them up for you (and is this included in the price), or will you be expected to transport and set everything up yourself? Is there already a foundation on the construction site for the classrooms, or will this need to be taken care of before you can take delivery? Many modular manufacturers can take care of this for you.
